When I graduated from the University of Washington in 2011, I had a master plan. My goal was to work for a few years, save up some money, and go to law school. With that in mind, I sought out and obtained a job with a local staffing agency that specialized in legal placements. My hope was to work in legal recruiting for a few years, get contacts within the major Seattle law firms, obtain my JD, and then have inroads to a new lawyer job.
Instead, I ended up really liking recruiting and, after placing some lawyers at Weyerhaeuser, was asked to go in-house for their recruiting department. In my current role, I manage all recruiting efforts for Weyerhaeuser’s Western Region (WA, OR, CA, ID, UT, CO, AZ, TX). This includes jobs ranging from log truck drivers and millwrights, to accountants and IT professionals, all the way up to strategic business leaders reporting to Weyerhaeuser’s Senior Management Team.
After five years at Weyerhaeuser, it was announced that we would be opening up an IT System Manager role for our recruiting platform, Taleo. I didn't have a lot of technical IT experience, but I had worked in the system since I started at Weyerhaeuser and I understood the internal team that the role would support as well as the needs of external candidates as they applied. I expressed my interest, went through the interview process, and ended up landing the role. There was definitely a learning curve for me, but through the support of our team and my own determination, I was able to master the technical ins and outs of Taleo. I've since completed multiple technical updates, process upgrades, and day to day technical support for both internal and external users.
I manage Weyerhaeuser's LinkedIn account on a daily basis. I have made it my goal to tell our story in a way that resonates with people, particularly those outside of our industry. With that in mind, I try to tell stories that will appeal to those who know nothing about Weyerhaeuser. Below are some examples of the types of posts that I create.
In the past, the flyers that we took to career fairs were largely word based and featured one or, space permitting, two jobs. After receiving feedback that many potential employees would like to be able to see more of our available jobs, I designed a new flyer as a template for the recruiting team.
Site visits have been critical for me as I work to stay up to date with the regions that I support. During these trips, I always make sure to bring my camera so that I can get photos for use on social media. Below are a handful of examples of photos I have taken and edited.
